We have often heard the proverb, “A sound mind is in a sound body”. The International Day of Yoga is an opportunity to reveal to the world the subtle science of yoga which everyone can practise not only for physical well-being, but also for a healthy, harmonious and happy life.
Around 1600 children from Amrita Vidyalayam, Juinagar participated in a Amrita Yoga Programme held at the school on June 21st, 2018. Each class participated in a 25 minute session held in the school quadrangle under the able supervision of Shri Sahebdin Ramprasad Das, an experienced Yoga teacher from Yoga Vidya Niketan, Vashi. Principal Brni. Rekha simultaneously conducted yoga sessions in the school auditorium. The senior secondary students participated in this programme at the Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Nerul (W). Teachers also actively participated in the yogasana demonstrations.
In her address to the students, Brni. Rekha defined yoga as a holistic approach to well-being. She outlined the essence of yoga and how it works on the levels of one’s body, mind, emotions and energy. Dasji explained how the word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj meaning ”to join”. Students were exposed to different yogasanas which would help them to focus and increase their energy levels. Each session started with a prayer and ended with the chanting of Shanthi mantra.
The school has a dedicated Yoga period for students from classes I to X. Meditation forms an integral part of the morning prayer. Apart from that, Yoga is also offered as one of the Co-curricular activities in the school.
