On September 1st, Mrs. Devakani, Project Director, Spell Bee, conducted a workshop on ‘Vocabulary Management’ exclusively for teachers. During a 45 minute session, Mrs. Devakani held the teachers glued to their seats through her interactive approach. The main focus of the workshop was on – “How to develop and improve English vocabulary”. The session was introduced with the question, “Why is it that a child of five gains good control over its mother tongue, whereas the same child fails to converse in English even after 17 years of schooling through English medium?” The answer given to this question was lack of knowledge of vocabulary and its proper usage. Mrs. Devkani also discussed the origin of the English language, i.e. from German, Latin, French, Greek and Spanish. Elucidating on how to make the meaning of words clear, stress the importance of the etymology of words and grammar, the role of phonetics etc., she suggested word breakup as the easiest way.
The session was a very refreshing experience for the teachers. Mrs. Babita Siddhu in her vote of thanks appreciated the efforts of Mrs. Devakani and called the workshop a very informative one. She also thanked the Principal for providing the teachers with such a wonderful opportunity.
