Young minds are the custodians of the environment. Understanding the need to spread the message of environment consciousness, especially when the festive season has started, Amrita Vidyalayam organized a workshop on Solid Waste Management for classes 3 to 7 in the month of September 2019. Ms. Lalitha T. from Stree Mukhti Sangathna interacted with the students in their classrooms. An informative PPT took them through the different types of plastics such as natural and man-made plastics, and the harmful effects of the careless disposal of plastics which leads to environmental degradation. While we cannot escape from the absolute fact that the consumption of plastic has become indispensable in our lives, mounds of trash comprising of plastic waste dumped in landfills and ocean beds are endangering marine life.
The workshop focused on self-awareness and simple measures to reuse household garbage by using composting techniques and eliminating the purchase of single use plastic. The three R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle were discussed in detail. Students were urged to insist upon carrying cloth bags to vegetable markets and for buying groceries. Reusing plastic bags to the extent possible and giving it to a scrap dealer later on will ensure that the plastic is recycled.
The objective of the workshop was certainly achieved as students expressed their thoughts and sought answers to their doubts.
