With more than 7 lakh students across 1950 schools participating in the last edition, the ‘Fevicol Science Project Challenge’ has become one of the biggest events for school students in the country. This year, the young minds of Amrita Vidyalayam took up the challenge and put up an interesting combination of their scientific and artistic skills. The Chief Guest for this event was Sri Ramkishan, the recipient of the INS award and many DAE awards, and who, as an Outstanding Scientist in BARC, was instrumental in implementing Energy and Water conservation measures leading to a cost saving of around Rs. 25 crores per annum. The eminent judges were Sri Mukesh Pandey and Sri Yogendra Singh of Pidilite Industries, who tested the students’ scientific temperament and understanding.
The theme for this year’s challenge was ‘Young Minds Creating a Better Tomorrow’. Students from grades 5 to 10 were divided into 2 categories. Students of 5th to 7th grades put up interesting displays on topics such as Renewable Sources of Energy, Global Warming and Water Resource Management, while students from grades 8th to 10th displayed their skills on topics such as Disaster Management, Pollution Control and Traffic Management.
Students had worked very hard for many days to ensure that the projects were neatly displayed. Household appliances were used in innovative ways to depict the various themes. Their understanding of each topic was clearly evident in the meticulous way in which they had created the various models, and also in the way they explained it to the judges. The challenge enabled the students to think on issues relevant to everyday life and find solutions that would help in creating a better tomorrow. The challenge also saw a unique amalgamation of art, craft and science which will help in developing the creativity of the children and strengthen scientific concepts.
The awareness thus created by this challenge will help the young minds to become sensitive to the various issues that the environment is facing today, and create a conscious understanding that nature is only as good as how we conserve it.
The school also had a parallel science exhibition on the same day in which students from grades 5 to 10 displayed their knowledge and understanding. Exhibits like Hydraulic Elevator, Sewage Plant, Air Cooler, Solar Energy, Water Cycle, etc., were very artistically created, and the students were enthusiastic to share their ideas with teachers, fellow students and parents.
Students of Grade 9 put up various food stalls as a part of the “Food Festival”. Both, teachers as well as students were seen enjoying the delicacies of the various cuisines. It was a reward well deserved after spending days preparing for the Fevicol Science Project Challenge and the Science Exhibition. The 9th graders made brisk business and were thrilled to be appreciated by their schoolmates and teachers.
